Ministry hails Team Malawi

Ministry of Youth and Sports has expressed satisfaction with Team Malawi’s performance at the   just-ended African Union Sports Council Region 5 Games in Namibia were Malawi clinched 32 medals, including seven gold and 11 silver.

Speaking during the team’s arrival at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe on Monday evening, director of sports Jameson Ndalama said:  “The success of such competitions is measured through the number of gold you win.

“During the previous [2022] Games, we only won two gold medals and this year, we scooped five more.

“In addition to that, out of 14 codes, only two disciplines failed to make the final stages.”

He attributed the performance to sound preparations and the introduction of Malawi Youth Games.

“We are now reaping the rewards because of the investment,” said Ndalama.

He said government will keep investing in youth development.

Team Malawi overall captain Chris Millie also attributed the results to good preparations.

He said: “We had about four training camps and there was good team spirit as well as the determination to win.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to thank the Malawi National Council of Sports and the ministry for all this.”

Gold medalist Nathan Chisale said the games gave them a platform to showcase their talents to a wider audience.

“It was good exposure and we have learnt a lot,’ said the athlete.

Overall, Malawi finished seventh out of 10 countries. Team South Africa were overall winners.

Principal secretary in the ministry Isaac Katopola welcomed the team at the airport on behalf of Minister of Sports Uchizi Mkandawire.
