Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba has hailed Malawi’s strong performance at the 2025 Southern Afarica Development Community (Sadc) Media Awards where three entries finished as runners-up.
Malawi emerged runners-up awards in Photojournalism, Radio, and Television categories. The awardees are Roy Nkosi of Malawi News Agency in Photojournalism, Innocent Kumchedwa of Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS )in Radio, and Kumbukani Kajumi of Malawi Film Unit in Television. Each awardee received $1000 as the prize.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency yesterday, Mumba, who led the Malawi delegation to the 45th Sadc Heads of State and Government Summit, described the recognition of three Malawian journalists as proof of the nation’s growing competitiveness and excellence in regional media.
“This clearly demonstrates that Malawi has the capacity to excel at any level globally, and we can compete with anyone and succeed. Our media is setting the trend against their regional peers and standing out,” he said.
One of the awardees, Kumchedwa described it as a career milestone and a stepping stone to greater heights. He expressed confidence that the exposure would empower him to aim for first position in future competitions.
“I am humbled to be recognised at a regional level. This is a huge honour for me. It shows that Malawian radio journalism can compete on the global stage,” he said.
In his remarks, Sadc National Media Coordinator for Malawi, Arthur Chipenda, said Malawi’s recognition demonstrates the increasing quality of the country’s journalism and reinforces the importance of consistent participation in regional media competitions.
This year, 29 entries were received across Print, Radio, Television, and Photojournalism categories. Winners in each category received $2 500 while runners-up earned $1 000.
