Police upbeat on reducing crime, road accidents

Police in Ndirande in Blantyre have expressed optimism that they will make the policing area safe of crime and road accidents due to collaboration with residents.

Speaking on Friday during Ndirande Police Station Executive Committee (SEC) Meeting, the station’s officer Robert Twalibu said they registered 223 crimes between January and March this year compared to 238 in the corresponding period in 2024.

He also said they recorded 129 road traffic accidents in the first quarter against 149 accidents registered in the first quarter of 2024.

“We have registered this milestone because we are working well with community members. As police, we will continue using all sections such as community policing and the Criminal Investigation Department to improve more,”

 said Twalibu.

On his part, SEC chairperson John Mpunga said the improvement comes amid inadequate resources such as torches, whistles, reflectors and vehicles in community police forums.

“Ndirande Police Station covers a large area that includes Ndirande, Chapima and South Lunzu. Materials to improve security are not sufficient,” he said.

During the meeting, Innocent Khembo, a resident, proposed the formation of a community mobilisation committee to ease financial constraints.

Mpunga welcomed the idea, saying it will help in mobilising resources from well-wishers to solve some of the challenges.

On her part, Ndirande Police Station coordinator Zelifa Muli said the Community Policing Department will continue engaging stakeholders to intensify efforts to fight crime.

The meeting sought to review the performance of the police and draught new ways to improve performance
