She said: “The department produces an estimation of what the rainy season will be like before the onset of the rainy season and we released the 2025/26 Seasonal Forecast for the country on September 13 2025.
“To ensure that people are knowledgeable of what to anticipate during the rainy season, we have embarked on awareness meetings in local authorities on this national seasonal forecast which is downscaled for all the districts.”
Mtilatila advised people in flood-prone areas to be careful throughout the season in terms of floods.
“The rainfall season comes with hazards and it is important to plan well so that we are not taken unawares when they come,” she said.
Mzuzu City Council disaster risk management officer Macdonald Gondwe commended the department for taking the weather forecast to grassroots level through various committees.
“Let me advise members of ward disaster risk management committees and Mzuzu City Council Disaster Risk Management Committee to be proactive in spreading this information to all communities to get prepared for meaningful intervention,” he said.
Mzuzu, just as the country, is expected to receive normal to above normal rainfall from this month to April 2026
