Police caution residents as 18 drown in Lake Malawi

Police in Salima have expressed concern with increased cases of drowning as the district has registered at least 18 cases in the district since January.

Salima Police Station officer-in-charge Albert Nyongani said this on Saturday during a media briefing ahead of the Mother’s Day holiday on October 15.

“It is sad that we keep losing people, mostly the youth because of avoidable incidences such as swimming under the influence of alcohol, using unsafe boats or ignoring weather warnings,” he said.

Nyongani said police have intensified patrols and community sensitisation efforts to promote water safety awareness, especially ahead of the upcoming holiday when many families are expected to visit lakeside resorts.

“We appeal to residents and visitors to prioritise safety by wearing life-saving jackets, avoiding dangerous swimming areas and paying attention to weather forecasts. Our officers will also work closely with lodge and boat owners to ensure a safe and peaceful holiday,” he said.

Nyongani also warned against the use of open lorries for passenger transport, noting that such vehicles have been responsible for several accidents involving holidaymakers travelling to the lake.

Senior Chief Maganga, whose area borders part of the lakeshore, expressed concern with the recurring drowning cases. He urged communities to take greater responsibility for their safety.

“We are concerned with burying young people who die needlessly in the lake. We urge parents to talk to their children about water safety and for everyone to respect the advice given by police and local guides,” she said.

Maganga appealed to government and development partners to intensify awareness campaigns and provide safety equipment in high-risk areas to help prevent further loss of life.

Salima, one of Malawi’s main lakeshore districts, records drowning incidents each year, particularly during festive seasons when families flock to the lake for recreation
