Lake of Stars kicks off in Nkhotakota tomorrow
The Lake of Stars festival tomorrow returns to Fish Eagle Lodge in Nkhotakota where festival goers are expected to enjoy a weekend of music, art and cultural celebration.
The annual lakeshore event known for its vibrant atmosphere featuring numerous artistic and cultural performances is set to light up the district once again after doing the same last year.
Dusty Orange Projects Et al (Dope) the producers of the festival say all is set and this year the event will feature about 120 artists from Malawi and outside the country.
Speaking in an interview yesterday, Dope executive director Sharmilla Elias said despite struggling with funding this year donations and support they have received from various partners and well-wishers has made it possible to bring the festival to life.
“All is set and preparations went well even though we had funding challenges. We were determined not to let financial constraints stop an event that has become a key part of the local creative calendar,” she said.
Riding on the festivals, recent recognition by Unesco for its cultural and sustainable impact, Elias said they will continue to use the arts to build community and promote sustainability.
“The communities around Nkhotakota will actively be involved in the festival activities. We have already engaged secondary school students on our side event Day of Ideas,” she said.
According to Elias headlining acts have confirmed their participation, with performances expected from both local and international artists.
“All the headliners have confirmed to perform during the event,” she said.
The festival will be headlined by South Africa musician Lady Amar alongside local musicians Madalitso Band, Keturah and Driemo.
In a separate interview, Madalitso Band co-manager Neil Nayar said the band is ready to perform in Nkhotakota for the event.
“The band is ready to perform at the festival on Saturday,” he said.
Beyond music, the festival will also feature cultural showcases, film screenings, creative workshops, poetry and environmental awareness activities promoting sustainability along the lakeshore.
All the activities will be taking place at three main stages at the festival including Gologolo stage, Mangelengele stage and Kweza space.
Now in its second consecutive year in Nkhotakota, the festival is expected to attract visitors from around the world.
