NGO donates medical supplies to health centre in Ntchisi

White Ribbon Alliance has donated equipment and medical supplies to a maternity ward at Malomo Health Centre in Ntchisi District to help improve maternal health at the facility.

The K4.2 million equipment that includes digital blood pressure machines, foetal scopes, foetal dopplers and tape measures and curtains, will be used for monitoring maternal and newborn health during pregnancy.

White Ribbon Alliance executive director Margaret Loma-Phiri said in an interview on Saturday that it was the organisation’s objective to complement government’s efforts to ensure that they provide dignified maternity care.

She said: “We thought of Ntchisi, specifically Malomo, because it is one of those areas with deliveries as high as 100 to 120 monthly.

“We wanted to support the area for our women to get the dignity they deserve.”

On his part, Ntchisi District director of health and social services Alexander Chithyola said the donation will help improve maternal health care in the district.

He said: “The hospital serves a big catchment population after Ntchisi District Hospital.

“We are excited that the support will promote safe motherhood in the district.”

Besides promoting safe motherhood, the organisation is also promoting water, sanitation and hygiene systems in the district.

A France-based philanthropist Marguerite Paffard supported the donation.
