Egenco, Escom upbeat on stable power outlook
Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) and Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) say they have devised comprehensive measures to sustain stable electricity supply during the festive season.
But the two entities acknowledged in separate interviews that heavy rains and technical faults may still trigger isolated outages.

Egenco public relations manager Moses Gwaza in an interview said the utility has strengthened operational preparedness across its hydropower and diesel power stations ahead of the rainy months and anticipated holiday-season demand.
He said Egenco has also intensified sediment-flushing activities to address increased silt and debris during the rains and is also implementing preventive maintenance on intake systems, fine screens, trash rakes, gates and other equipment used to regulate water flow.
On his part, Escom chief public relations and communications officer Pilirani Phiri said the power distributor has completed major planned maintenance on the network and is now focused on rapid-response readiness.
He said: “Escom has strengthened coordination with generation companies to anticipate demand trends and optimise load management. The main risks during the rainy season include storm-related faults, falling trees, lightning strikes, flood damage, vandalis, and illegal connections.”
Meanwhile, Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) consumer affairs and public relations manager Fitina Khonje said the regulator anticipates only minimal load-shedding during evening peaks due to reduced solar generation at night.
