4 teams face the chop

Four TNM Super League teams Mighty Tigers, Mzuzu City Hammers, Goshen City Dedza Dynamos and Mafco FC are on the verge of relegation to fill two remaining slots.

With rookies Karonga-based Songwe Border United already relegated as they anchor the 16-team league with only six points from 29 outings, two more teams are set to face the chop.

Blantyre-based Tigers are second from the bottom with 27 points, one point behind 14th placed Hammers. Dynamos are just above the relegation zone on inferior goal difference following a tie on 31 points with 12th-positioned Salima-based Malawi Defence Force outfit Mafco FC.

Tigers, Hammers and Dynamos remain with two matches each while Mafco has one game to wind up the season.

Tigers technical director Robin Alufandika, whose team is the oldest among the strugglers and has not been relegated since the inaugural season in 1986, has since urged supporters to include them in prayers to survive the chop.

“I urge our supporters to come in large numbers to cheer us on in our two remaining games and keep us in prayers. This team has a great history and does not deserve to die,” he said.

Alufandika attributed their struggles to a poor start, saying they began their campaign with several inexperienced players and they had so many injuries in their striking force, which resulted in scoring challenges.

Tigers face Lilongwe-based Blue Eagles away this afternoon and will take on Ekhaya FC of Blantyre on Sunday.

Hammers coach Elias Chirambo yesterday said they are also geared to put up a gallant fight in their away fixtures against dethroned champions Silver Strikers this afternoon and FCB Nyasa Bullets on Sunday.

“We remain with tough matches, but we are not giving up hope. We will  fight to the end,” he said.

Chirambo said their struggles resulted from selling most of their key players last season, but they have now assembled a strong squad.

Dynamos are expected to host Creck Sporting Club this afternoon and will take on Moyale Barracks in their last match while Mafco will host Karonga United.
