‘Mushroom Shade’ turns into a movie

One of Malawi’s popular television series Mushroom Shade has transitioned into a full movie is set to  premiere on April 25 at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

Speaking in an interview yesterday from his base in the US, producer Chaz said the change was necessitated by the feedback followers of the series have provided for some time.

“People love the Mushroom Shade series. They are so hooked to the storyline such that a majority said they did not enjoy the suspense of waiting for the next episode to see what happen. That is why I have just decided to give them in one block,” he said.

Chaz said the movie will retain the same concept just like the Mushroom Shade series only that they have added new storylines. He refused to divulge more details about the film’s synopsis as he said he wanted to keep people curious.

“People who have watched the trailer might have a slight idea of what is going on, but it does not give a full picture of what the movie is all about. There will be surprises obviously in the production. You may call it twists and turns, but that is subjective. We will see how viewers will react to it,” said the producer.

South African popular Tik Toker Victor Ivyic is one notable addition to the cast and the digital content creator is set to grace the premiere of the movie in Malawi. He will join the cast which also has names such as Cynthia Zonde Zulu, Bucci Mwale, Amos Msekandiana, Kondwani Kamiyala, Onesimus, Fortunata Mkawa and Mwai Simbota.

The producers have also indicated that they will use the  premiere to present a Lifetime Legend Award to Malawi’s departed theatre king Du Chisiza Jnr.

Chaz said it is time Malawians started honouring their deserving sons and daughters who have contributed in various fields, including the creative space.

“There are many people in Malawi, including myself who used to look up to Du Chisiza Jnr. Growing up I hoped that one day I would work with him. The honour is long overdue. He is a legend; he is the greatest of all time. I wish if he was around to receive the award in person,” he said.

Doreen Chisiza, one of the late  Du’s children said: “As a family we are honoured to receive this award on his behalf. We wish if he was receiving it on hiw own, but we are grateful for his life and contribution while he was here with us. At the same time we are also proud to see the strides the Malawian creative industry is making. “
