Temwa extends KC Current contract
Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga has extended her stay with US National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Kansas City (KC) Current after signing a new three-year contract.
The new deal will keep her at the club beyond the initial contract she signed in 2024.

Speaking after signing the extension, Temwa said her decision to remain in Kansas City was easy because of the support she receives from the club and the community.
“This contract extension means a lot to me because I call Kansas City home. The way the club and the city and my teammates support me is truly special. I am looking forward to staying longer in Kansas City and working hard with my teammates.”
The Scorchers forward further expressed gratitude for the affection she has received from everyone connected to the club.
“It is so special the way the people love me. They support me, my teammates, the technical panel, the media team, the coaches and medical staff. The whole city and the fans cheer for me. I just want to give back to them without changing teams. I am so excited to be here,” she said.
In a statement, KC Current owners Angie and Chris Long hailed Chawinga as one of the most influential players in women’s football in the US and said the club was delighted to secure her services for the coming years.
The statement reads: “Temwa is truly special and no one changes the game more than she does. She displays an unwavering commitment to scoring goals under pressure and when it matters most.
“Combined with her defensive presence, she is, without question, one of the best players in the world.
“She is someone people want to play with and she makes our team better. We are so excited to extend her contract and keep her in Kansas City.”
Since arriving in Kansas City in 2024, Temwa has established herself as one of the league’s outstanding performers, earning admiration for her pace, work ethic and goal-scoring prowess.
She won the NWSL Most Valuable Player award, the equivalent of the league’s Player of the Season accolade, and the Golden Boot in consecutive seasons.
She became the first African player to win the two awards and the first player to claim both honours twice.
