Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri has urged traditional leaders to be patriotic, transparent and accountable when discharging their duties.
He said this on Saturday during the elevation of group village head Kampambanya of Lilongwe District to Sub-Traditional Authority (ST/A).
Phiri said traditional leaders play a critical role in supporting the government’s development programmes and ensuring that public resources and services are distributed fairly within their communities.
He said: “It is the responsibility of traditional leaders to work with government in implementing development projects.
“Government will not tolerate chiefs who are biased in the execution of their duties. Treat everyone in your areas equally, especially when distributing relief items and other public resources.”
The minister further warned chiefs against sexually exploiting young girls, saying such behaviour undermines the dignity of traditional leaders.
Representing fellow traditional leaders, Senior Chief Chadza congratulated ST/A Kampambanya on his elevation and urged him to lead with honesty, fairness and dedication.
He encouraged the newly-elevated chief to promote peace, unity and harmony among his subjects while preserving the country’s rich cultural values and traditions.
The senior chief also called on the new Sub-T/A to work closely with government and other stakeholders in advancing development initiatives that improve people’s livelihoods in his area.
