Human Rights of Women and Girls with Disabilities in Malawi (WAG Disability Rights) has trained women with disabilities in Lilongwe District on how to produce compost manure for their backyard gardens to achieve food security.
WAG Disability Rights economic empowerment coordinator Florence Singanyama Thaundi said on Saturday in Traditional Authority Tsabango in the district that their mission is to help the women increase their access to nutritious food and household income.
She said: “We gave the women vegetable seeds, manure and other inputs but they could not put them to good use since they lacked skills.
“With support from IM Swedish International Development Partner, we have equipped the beneficiaries with skills to produce manure and how to apply them effectively.”

Thaundi said the organisation will settle water bills for the women who will use tap water for irrigation.
Tikondane Group chairperson Alinafe Dama commended the organisation for walking its talk in training the women farmers.
“We are pleased to acquire the skills to produce manure because we will improve our crop production,” she said.

environmental systems and green enterprise officer Ritta Mandaaliza hailed WAG Disability Rights for empowering the women to produce organic fertiliser.
She said: “We came here as a partner to help these women have practical skills to turn waste into value since getting chemical fertilisers is too expensive.
“Other organisations should emulate this spirit and help more vulnerable women to build their resilience.”
