Six suspects at large in British national abduction

Malawi Police Service says eight suspects were involved in the abduction of British national Nusrat Osman, 47, who was rescued on Thursday night, but six remain at large.

Inspector General of Police Richard Luhanga told a media briefing at the South West Police Region headquarters in Blantyre yesterday that investigations are ongoing.

He said two suspects described as masterminds were shot dead at the scene. He added that the kidnappers had not demanded any ransom.

 “We are yet to establish the motive behind the kidnapping and our investigations are ongoing,” he said.

The IG said six people initially assisted in the investigations and split among them the K30 million that was put forward as reward for credible information leading to the whereabouts of Osman.

He also clarified that there is nothing irregular about the presence of deputy IG of (operations) Noel Kayira at the scene of the rescue.

Luhanga said Kayira, who was shot in the stomach and remains in stable condition at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital, was on the ground to encourage officers.

“It was his commitment and bravery that led to the successful operation,” he said. “We should look at the good job he has done.”

Luhanga further attributed the successful rescue mission to community assistance.

He said while police continue investigating the matter and will increase their presence to strengthen policing as a way of dealing with such crime.

Taking her turn, National Police spokesperson Gladys Chiwaula said the service is committed to safeguarding public safety, protecting citizens rights and maintaining peace and order across Malawi.

“Malawi Police Service also commends all the officers who were involved for their dedication, professionalism and commitment displayed throughout this successful operation,” she said.

“We would also like to acknowledge the support from the Asian community, mobile operators, Road Traffic Directorate and members of the public for the trust, support and cooperation rendered during this period.”

Osman was abducted on September 11 at Mount Pleasant in Blantyre, with the suspects using a Nissan Dualis registration number CA 6956.

And during the rescue operation last Thursday, two suspects were shot dead. Police identified them as Marcolino Munguambe, 43, a Mozambican national, and Limbani Anthony,44.

The suspects were armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and a Grisan Regard MC Pistol.

First Vice-President Jane Ansah visited Kayira at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital on Friday. Others who visited Kayira include Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito and Minister of Health Madalitso Baloyi.

Speaking to the media, Mukhito said they recovered mobile phones belonging to the suspected kidnappers and he commended Kayira for his dedication during the operation.

He said: “This has increased confidence in the police and I am happy. We also have to commend the community for coming with tips and trusting. What we can assure the public is that police has the capacity.”
