Senior Chief Lulanga of Mangochi District has thanked philanthropist Paul Sosola for supporting 236 learners at Lulanga Primary School with uniforms.
In an interview on Monday after Sosola handed over the uniforms, he said many children do not wear uniforms due to rampant poverty.
“However, the charity will relieve the children’s parents as they will now concentrate on other equally important things,” said the chief.
However, Lulanga sounded an alarm over the lack of a secondary school in his area, saying the situation is forcing many children to abandon their education after completing primary school.
“The lack of a secondary school in my area is a source of concern because children here are hardworking in their studies,” said the chief.
Sosola, a resident of Lilongwe who works as a driver with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, said his donation sought to support government and other organisations in promoting education, adding that he wants to reach more than 10 000 children with support by 2030.
Lulanga Zone primary education adviser Rodrick Chumba thanked Sosola for the donation, saying it will help learners who previously lacked uniforms to feel equal with their fellow pupils and identify with the school.
“The uniforms will motivate the children and encourage them to work hard in their studies,” he said.
Standard Seven learner Fatima Sikubeba also thanked Sosola, saying their parents failed to buy uniforms due to poverty.
