National Spelling Bee contest rolls out in Mzimba District
The first contest of Malawi National Spelling Bee rolled out at Mzimba Secondary School on Tuesday to mark the opening of the competition for the 2026/27 season.
The contest, which is run by the Malawi National Spelling Bee, attracted 120 spellers.
In an interview, Malawi National Spelling Bee executive director Lewis Mbaula said the competition is run to promote literacy among learners and expand vocabulary.

“We want to enhance phonological awareness by helping participants recognise sound patterns, phonics and spelling rules in English, build Mental Aloud Skills thus developing cognitive abilities like on-the-spot decision-making, analytical reasoning and working under pressure,” he said.
From Mzimba, up next is Nkhata Bay today and Mzuzu tomorrow.
The registration for the Central Region schools or leaners closes on November 30 2026 while for the Southern Region schools ends on January 13 2027.
The top three spellers for this season stand a chance to represent Malawi at the 2027 World Spelling Bee Championship in Beijing, China and the top six shall represent Malawi at the 2028 African Spelling Bee in Rwanda.
This season’s National Spelling Bee is being run in partnership with Puma Malawi, Old Mutual (Malawi) plc, Finca Malawi, Britam Insurance, Umodzi Park Holdings, Tree Business Suppliers, Malawi Airlines, Super Maheu, Chikho Hotel, SAL Enterprise and its exclusive broadcasting partner, Zodiak Broadcasting Station.
