‘My prayer for Malawi’

Listen to this article

Due to the limited space we had last week, we heavily edited Janet Karim’s Christmas prayer for Malawi and it lost its essence. As you celebrate the dawn of a new year, take a moment to read through this inspirational prayer, re-published in its entirety.

Janet Zeenat Karim, in the Malawi Foreign Service working as a diplomat in USA.

Our Father and God, we praise You for Your goodness to our nation Malawi in 2011, and giving us blessings far beyond what we deserve. We know all is not right with Malawi. We deeply need a moral and spiritual renewal to help us meet the many challenges we face. Convict us of sin.

Help us to turn to You in repentance and faith. Set our feet on the path of Your righteousness and peace. LORD heal our land. Your word says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” May this be a new era for Malawi, as we humble ourselves and acknowledge You alone as our Saviour and LORD of our land.

Heavenly Father, we humble ourselves under Your mighty hand. Forgive us for our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us draw near to You with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let Your Word dwell in us richly this coming year.

Fill us with the knowledge of Your will, in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, that we may live and conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of You, fully pleasing You, and being fruitful in every good work.

Cause righteousness and praise to spring forth from our hearts in awe of You. Let the earth be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. Send forth Your Spirit of Truth to bear witness of You. Cause us to repent and to turn from all idols. Let Malawi be awakened! Let the earth hear the voice of the LORD!

Heavenly Father, we give thanks for our government. We pray for all men and women having authority over us in any way. We pray today for all our nation’s leaders: our President, cabinet ministers, members of parliament, and our religious and civic leaders. Give them the wisdom to know what is right, and the courage to do it.

Pour out Your Spirit upon them and make Your Word known to them. Cause them to be men and women of integrity, obedient concerning us, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty. Let wisdom enter their hearts, and let knowledge be pleasant to them. Let discretion preserve them and understanding keep them, to deliver them from the way of evil and from evil men.

Make their hearts and ears attentive to godly counsel, doing what is right in your sight. Let the upright dwell in our government. Let this nation remember from where they have fallen, repenting, and returning to doing their first works, setting their hearts and their souls to seek the LORD, humbling themselves, praying, and turning from wicked ways.

Then hear them, O LORD, and forgive our sins and heal our land. Open our eyes and turn us from darkness to light. Soften the hearts that are hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Deliver Malawi from destructions.

Father, You have been longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, that all should come to repentance. Raise up a standard in Malawi. Cause the rains of Your Spirit to flood this land and revive Your work in the midst of us. Raise up intercessors for Malawi to pull down strongholds over this land. And let the glory of the Lord be revealed!

This we pray in Jesus name, Amen.
