ACB halts NAO recruitment of auditors

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has directed National Audit Office (NAO) to cancel the recruitment process for the positions of Assistant Auditor General and Auditor General due to alleged irregularities and unfair practices.

The bureau’s acting director general Gabriel Chembezi said in a statement issued on Wednesday that investigations showed that examination papers were shared and that a senior official received a bribe.

The statement reads: “The investigations have discovered evidence that examination papers were shared within an internal NAO WhatsApp group and that a senior NAO official received a suspected bribe from one of the job applicants.”

ACB has since directed NAO to conduct a fresh, transparent and fair recruitment exercise for both posts.

Meanwhile, National Advocacy Platform chairperson Benedicto Kondowe has said the alleged examination leakages and bribery are troubling.

NAO was established under the Public Audit Act and Section 184 of the Constitution of Malawi.

Its mandate includes auditing government ministries, departments, statutory bodies, and public funds.
