Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare has pledged to strengthen the protection of children with albinism and other persons with disabilities through increased funding and improved access to essential social services.

Line Minister Mary Navicha said government had allocated K2 billion to the Disability Trust Fund as part of efforts to improve the welfare of persons with disabilities.

She made the commitment on Wednesday during the opening of a two-day workshop in Lilongwe organised by the African Child Policy Forum (ACPF) and Youth Network and Counselling (Yoneco).

Navicha said government was also implementing measures to improve access to education, healthcare and employment for persons with disabilities.

“Malawi has made a number of achievements. So far, we have not recorded any killings of persons with albinism for quite some time,” the minister said.

ACPF executive director Daniel Bekele hailed Malawi’s progress in reducing ritual attacks and killings of persons with albinism.

On his part, Yoneco executive director MacBain Mkandawire said Malawi’s challenge is translating laws and policies into practical action.

“Malawi has very good policies and laws, all documented, but action is very limited in all the things that we do,” he said.
