Malawi is hosting a women leaders’ conference at the Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe.

Close to 70 young local female leaders are among the 250 women leader who started the meeting on Monday.

Called the Women Steering Innovative Leadership in Africa International, the meeting ends on September 11. The Government of Malawi through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare in partnership with Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa) and NGO Gender Coordination Network have organised the meeting.

“UAF-Africa recognises the importance of spaces for women’s human rights and development actors to get together, brainstorm on problems and solutions, strategise on actions, gain new knowledge and be reinvigorated in their activism.

“The conference will draw on the African Union (AU) vision of an ‘integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its citizens and representing a dynamic force of the global arena’ and will seek to contribute to the strategies towards achieving the AU vision,” said the organisation’s executive director Ndanatsei Tawamba.

“Out of this figure, 120 are young women who we want to be mentored by their seniors through role modelling and sharing experiences. And out of these, 70 are Malawians who we want to spread the message to others when they go back home,” said NGO-GCN Chairperson Emma Kaliya.
