Luck has once again deserted Flames defender James Sangala who has been released by Angola top league side, Benfica de Luanda in a massive clear out that has resulted in 14 casualties.

Sangala has since returned home for good and confirmed his release with the Luanda side, six months after he signed a two-year contract extension following the expiry of his earlier loan deal from his club of origin Primeiro de Agosto.

“They have opted to pay me out for the remainder of the contract and it was by mutual agreement. It is part of the game. My concern now is on the forthcoming Flames games especially the trip to Nigeria. I feel we have a chance in the World Cup qualifiers,” said the defender who was also paid out estimated K6 million by Thanda Royal Zulu after cutting short his contract in 2009.

“In principle, my heart is not on playing locally. There are no openings so far so let’s wait and see. I am in the process of retiring.”

Sangala signed for Benoni United from Mighty Wanderers in 2006 before the South African side sold its premiership status to Thanda. Recently, Angolan journalist was at pains to understand how Agosto in the first place let go Sangala, saying he was a general fitter who could just play anywhere demanded by the coach.

  1. It is unfortunate when one looks at the fact that Sangala is a central defender for Malawi. This proves that we have very limited options for players in defensive position and other positions.
