The Balaka Multiparty Liaison Committee (MPLC) has rated the district’s Central East Constituency as the hotspot for political conflicts during elections.

This was disclosed at Nkhonde Teachers Development Centre in the area of Traditional Authority T/A Kalembo in the district.

Speaking during the presentation of the MPLC constitution, one of the district’s Germany International Cooperation (GIZ) officials, Mabvuto Mkandawire, said the August 2013 Balaka District Constituency Review Report named the constituency as having registered the highest number of political conflicts during elections in four constituencies.

“The August 2013 Balaka District Constituency Review Report revealed that Balaka Central East is number one in political conflicts during elections of the four constituencies. This is disheartening and we have started our constituency multiparty liaison committee meetings from here so that we should find a lasting solutions as we draw closer to the country’s first ever tripartite elections,” said Mkandawire.

Traditional Authority Amidu agreed that the area has been experiencing political turmoil during elections.

Balaka Police officer-in-charge asked people to desist from violence during elections.
