Be praying for us—Chilima

Vice-President Saulos Chilima has urged the clergy to continue praying for political leaders so that they continue keeping in mind the needs and aspirations of the citizenry in the country.

He made the call on Saturday at St. Peter Claver-Nsipe Catholic Parish in Ntcheu District during the Golden Jubilee Eucharistic celebration for small christian communities of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (Amecea) monitored on Luntha Television.

He appreciated the role the Catholic Church plays in complementing government’s efforts to spur national development.

Chilima: We will constantly rely on you

Said Chilima: “We will also constantly rely on you to pray for us so that we must always put the welfare of the people first as we serve in our positions.”

He also pleaded for continued relations between government and religious institutions with a view of developing the country together for generations to come.

During the ceremony, Episcopal Conference of Malawi chairperson Archbishop George Desmond Tambala urged both the laity and clergy not to get tired of  serving God and humanity.

He said: “What compels the Church to embark on development work, is because it feels sorry for people. In this country, amidst us, people face different challenges and sometimes these people look like sheep without a shepherd.”

Bishop Rogath Kimaryo from Tanzania, who is bishop chairperson of the Amecea Pastoral Department, said the overall goal of the celebration was to re-awaken the spirituality of small Christian communities.

The mass was graced by delegates from various Amecea countries including Malawi, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, and Uganda.—The Nation
