Blantyre Zero took their title defence bid to another level on Thursday when they subjected hosts Sitima Yoce Sisters to an 11-1 torture in the quarter-finals of the Donna’s Eggs Southern Region Women Football Tournament in Zomba.

Sitima’s Eliza Kenneth scored first five minutes into the game while Zero’s striker Enesio Mhango equalised soon thereafter and went on to earn a hat-trick before half-time. Mhango tops the scorers’ chart with 24 goals.

In the second-half, Ruth Tambala took Zero’s lead beyond Sitima’s reach as she notched four goals before Pilirani Malora, Emily Jossam, Charity Phiri and Chimwemwe Sapangwa completed the rout with a strike each.

Zero were the second outfit to qualify for the semi-finals as we went to press after King’s Ladies did it with a 1-0 victory over favourites Ntopwa Super Queens last week.

The other semi-finalists were expected from yesterday’s quarter-final encounters between Zomba City Queens and Chikhwawa Sisters at BAT Ground in Blantyre; and ATU Ladies versus Chikhambi Sisters at Chikhwawa Community Centre Ground.

According to Southern Region Women Football Committee (SRWFC) general secretary Immaculate Chiwaya, Blantyre Zero will take on winners between Zomba and Chikhwawa in the semi-finals while King’s Ladies and victors of ATU Ladies versus Chikhambi match will face off in the other semi-final.

“The semi-finals will be played next Saturday at BAT Ground,” said Chiwaya.
