Broadcasters urged to tell truth
Ministry of Information and Digitisation Principal Secretary Baldwin Chiyamwaka has called on national and regional broadcasters to become champions of truth as Malawi prepares for the September 16 2025 General Election.
He said this yesterday in Mangochi during the opening of an election reporting training for broadcasters that Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) organised.

“An election is a sensitive issue. Reporting unverified information is dangerous and can lead to chaos, which can undermine the credibility of the electoral process,” said Chiyamwaka.
He urged broadcasters to uphold professionalism and integrity, emphasising that they are the voice of the people.
“People trust information from your institutions. Therefore, always strive for accuracy and fairness in your reporting,” said Chiyamwaka.
He further advised media practitioners to maintain their independence and avoid being influenced by political actors seeking favourable coverage or malicious attacks on opponents.
Macra board member Alekeni Menyani also warned participants against spreading fake news, especially as the country heads into the campaign period.
“A healthy democracy depends on objective and responsible broadcasting. That is why broadcasters should uphold the truth. Let us correct information,” he said.
The training is being held under the theme ‘Election broadcasting in the 21st century: Opportunities, challenges and solutions’.
