Blantyre United FC on Saturday beat Changalume Barracks 1-0 to open a four-point lead at the top of Masters Security Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) Premier League.

A lone strike from Mwayi Kampezeni was enough to earn his side a win after the soldiers’ defence failed to clear the ball into safety. The win has heightened their chances of promotion to the TNM Super League as they lead with 75 points from 35 games played this far.

Speaking in an interview after the game, Blantyre United owner and technical director Lawson Nakoma mocked some teams who are also in close pursuit of the league title, saying:  “It is now boring without pretenders breathing down our necks. Many teams talked about being contenders but it seems we are having the last laugh.”

Mitra Icons failed to close the gap when they were held by Cobbe Barracks to a 2-2 draw in Blantyre. The Ndirande-based outfit now have 71 points from 35 games. On the same day, Zomba United were also left frustrated following a goalless draw against the visiting MDF Marine. This means Zomba are third with 67 points from 34 games, a result which leaves them in a difficult situation in the title contention.

Their captain Wado Ching’oma conceded that it will be a tall order to rise to the occasion following some disappointing results.

“Stalemate results of games involving Fomo, Matamando and MDF Marine have derailed our chances in the title race. It will need extra effort from us to pull the strings and hope that Blantyre United drop some points. But that is just an imagination, anything can happen,” he said.

Other results at the weekend: Fomo 3 Chikwawa United 2, Be Forward Wanderers Reserves 3 Nchalo United 4, Nyasa United 0 Mangochi Police 1. n
