Despite slackening in the TNM Super League title chase, Big Bullets have a reason to celebrate this festive period as they topped the Sapota Mapeto Promotion’s chart in September and October to receive K3.4 million.
TNM presented cheques to the league’s 15 teams at College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex in Blantyre on Friday. Mighty Wanderers took second position with K2.8 million while Silver Strikers came third with K743 211.
Bullets have so far made close to K4.8 million since the SMS campaign started in June. The initiative aims to generate income for Super League teams from their respective supporters. Wanderers and Silver follow with approximately K3.9 million and slightly over K1 million, respectively.
“We thank TNM for introducing this initiative which came to our rescue in the face of the prevailing economic hardships most teams such as us are facing due to lack of corporate sponsorship,” said Bullets general secretary Higger Mkandawire.
His Wanderers counterpart David Kanyenda said they do not take the innovative programme for granted as it has helped to bail out his team, which lost MTL sponsorship in the middle of the league season.
The promotion has not been that favourable for other big teams such as the league’s title contenders Moyale Barracks, Kamuzu Barracks and Mafco, who accumulated K45 630, K29 430 and K16 920 respectively in four months. Evirom FC anchor the list with K10 630.
TNM head of marketing Sobhuza Ngwenya and Super League of Malawi (Sulom) treasurer Tiya Somba-Banda have urged soccer fans to patronise the campaign so that their favourite clubs can earn extra money.
