 Bullets, nomads on song

Giants FCB Nyasa Bullets and Mighty Wanderers maintained their 100 percent records in the TNM Super League yesterday after chalking their fifth and fourth wins on the trot, respectively.

The People’s Team saw off a strong-willed Chitipa United 3-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre while the Nomads edged Creck Sporting Club 1-0 at Champion Stadium in Mponela, Dowa.

Bullets still sit pretty at the pinnacle with 15 points from five games as the Nomads continue to breathe down their neck with 12 points, having played a game less.

At Kamuzu Stadium, after being restricted for the better part of the first half by a resilient Basongo, Bullets made a breakthrough in the 37th minute through their pint-sized midfielder Mike Mkwate who was set up by Chawanangwa Gumbo.

A late brace from Babatunde Adepoju sealed the 17-time champions’ victory.

The lanky Nigerian forward doubled Bullets’ lead in the 86th minute with a simple tap-in after being put through by Chikumbutso Salima.

Four minutes later, he netted his second of the day and Bullets’ third, calmly converting from a rebound after Yamikani Mologeni’s attempt had hit the post.

Despite the win, Bullets coach Peter Mponda described the result as “deceiving”.

He said: “We didn’t play well, the performance was hugely doisappointing.

“We were second on the ball, we were slow and when in possession, we were very slow to rotate the ball. So, the scoreline is good, but the performance was not impressive at all.”

On the other hand, Chitipa coach Kondwa Ikwanga attributed the loss to loss of concentration on the part of his charges towards the end.

“We lost the plot towards the very end at a time when we were trying to push for an equaliser, the boys didn’t apply some of the tips I gave them,” he said.

Chitipa lie 13th in the 16-team league with five points from six matches. They have won once, drawn twice and lost thrice.

At Champion Stadium, Francisco Madinga’s 57th minute strike ensured that three points were in the bag for the Nomads.

Creck coach Joseph Kamwendo said despite the loss, he was impressed with his players’ performance.

He said: “I am proud of my boys, when you talk about big teams in the country, Wanderers are one of them, but they played without fear, they played with a purpose.

“They wanted to win, but we didn’t create enough chances.”

Following the loss, Creck Sporting of Lilongwe are second from the bottom with four points from five matches. They have won once, drawn once and lost three.

On his part, Nomads coach Bob Mpinganjira described the match as tough.

“We had good chances in the first half, but we didn’t make good use of them. The good thing is that we did not concede. A fourth straight win is a boost for us, we’ll take each game as it comes,” he said.

At Dedza Stadium, Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos turned into generous hosts as they suffered a 0-4 humiliation at the hands of Karonga United.

Geoffrey Mkoko, Allen Chihana, Nature Kaonga and Alick Austin were on target for Ingwina ya Karonga, whohave moved up to third with nine points from four matches.
