Bvumbwe communities to build police station

Communities around Bvumbwe in Thyolo District have embarked on a project to build a multi-million kwacha police facility to replace the one vandalised two years ago.

In an interview on Saturday, the project’s resource mobilisation committee chairperson Leo Chimbwanya said as a community they realised their mistakes;hence, taking steps to put up a new facility.

“We want to build a modern, safer home with beds, nets, cooker and other things,” he said.

Chimbwanya said the damaged structure needed K17 million to maintain; hence, the decision by the community to build a new facility.

“The modern facility will cost K315 million and we have already received 3000 blocks which are enough for its foundation,” he said.

M e a n w h i l e , Chimbwanya pleaded for more support for the project.

In a separate interview, South West Region police spokesperson Joseph Sauka said the project was handed over to the contractor on February 20 2024.

He said it was costly to operate from Limbe Police Station to serve Bvumbwe.

Sauka admitted that from 2021 four police formations were torched in the region.

“The formations are in Mwanza, Neno, Blantyre and Thyolo but now they are functional,” he said.

Thyolo North legislator Ephraim Nayeja (Democratic Progressive Party) said they plan to restore a full police station status and not sub-station as it was according to plan.

He said he engaged the Ministry of Homeland Security to construct 20 houses for security officers on the available land.
