Bwaila Hospital nursing and midwifery officer Bertha Kaudza says the hospital treats about 268 post-abortion cases per month resulting from unsafe abortions.

She said this on Tuesday during a study tour Family Planning Association of Malawi (Fpam) in conjunction with the European Parliamentary Forum on Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF) organised for members of Parliament (MPs) from Europe to appreciate how sexual and reproductive health issues are facilitated in the country.

Kaudza said the hospital is overwhelmed as Lilongwe’s population has increased over the years.

Kaudza: The hospital is overwhelmed

She said: “With the inclusion of sexual and reproductive health services, there are more clients coming for admissions.

“I appreciate the parliamentarians’ visit so that we can show them how we are handling the sexual and reproductive health issues at our facility. We receive many post-abortion cases.”

Parliamentary Committee on Social and Community Affairs chairperson Savel Kafwafwa said the country is struggling in several areas, including sexual and reproductive health issues.

He said: “We can see the evidence at the facility that the hospital is overwhelmed as many women are lying on the floor waiting for assistance.

“We need to make sure that the population is educated on sexual and reproductive health issues.”

Before visiting the hospital, the MPs from Europe had a caucus with some Malawian MPs at Parliament Building in Lilongwe to discuss the status of sexual and reproductive health issues in the country.
