CAF allows spectators for Zimbabwe, Malawi match

The Zimbabwe Women’s National Football Team on Saturday got a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s 2028 Los Angeles Olympic qualification second leg against the Scorchers after CAF allowed spectators to watch the match at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

The development comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had earlier imposed a provisional ban on fans at the venue following the death of a fan in a stampede during a recent 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo men’s teams.

A statement from Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) says CAF has given them the green light to have at least 10 000 fans.

Part of the statement reads:  “Zifa informs supporters and all stakeholders that CAF has granted exceptional, strictly conditional authorisation to admit a maximum of 10 000 spectators.

“Zifa reiterates its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the supporter who tragically lost their life. The safety of spectators, players, officials and all match personnel remains our foremost priority.

“Going forward, stadium gates will open five hours before kick-off. Supporters are strongly encouraged to arrive early to allow adequate time for security screening, orderly entry and seating.”

Zifa said it will follow the guidelines in detail while admission will be strictly controlled and attendance will not exceed the authorised limit.

Meanwhile, women’s football enthusiast Isaac Jomo Osman has said the development will also be a boost for Malawi as some supporters are planning to travel to Harare to cheer the Scorchers, who won the first leg 2-0 on Friday at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

“Some fans are mobilising themselves to travel to Zimbabwe to cheer our girls. So, the decision suits us fine,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Malawi National Women’s Football Team flew to Harare yesterday and are expected to train at the match venue this afternoon.
