Campaign mood grips DPP in Mzuzu
Blue was the dominant colour in Mzuzu on Thursday when the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) dished out K3 million and party cloth to female vendors in an early campaign spree.
The governing party has embarked on an early campaign spree ahead of May 2019 Tripartite Elections.
In an interview, DPP regional governor Kenneth Sanga said the governing party embarked on the meet-and-greet spree to empower small-scale businesspersons who contribute effectively to the country’s economic development.
“We have no intention to use women for campaign purposes, but we just want to appreciate what they are doing. In fact, we started with men last week. Today we are with the women. We are being gender sensitive in our interactions,” he said
Each woman received K5 000.
DPP regional director of women (North) Joyce Chikukula said the meeting was one way of encouraging women to take part in politics in the spirit of the 50:50 campaign.
In line with the campaign to eliminate gender inequalities in politics, she said the party wants more women to take up key roles in decision-making. n
