The St Michael and all Angels Church under the Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) on Sunday officially announced the wedding between President Peter Mutharika and his confidante Grace Maseko.

The reading of banns in church came amid a heated debate in some quarters who questioned the church for allegedly going against its own rules in terms of weddings.

The critics claimed that the CCAP Church rules provide that a wedding should be announced three weeks before the officiation.

However, Blantyre CCAP Synod spokesperson the Reverend Alex Maulana, while confirming the announcements, said

the church announces weddings twice.

He said registration of the wedding was made on June 13 2014; hence, the two announcements in church on Sunday.

Said Maulana: “I can confirm that the bride-to-be, Grace Maseko, and representatives from both Maseko and Mutharika families came on Friday for registration hence the announcements.”

He said despite the President’s absence during registration, there was no way the church could have refused to bless the wedding.

Maulana said this is not the first time for the church to officiate such kind of a wedding.

He said: “We have had situations like these before. It’s only that this wedding has attracted a lot of attention because it involves the President of the country.”

Maulana said the public should understand the circumstances surrounding the President and that the church has not succumbed to any pressure from his office.
