Central Region Football Association of Malawi (CRFA) has become the second Football Association of Malawi (FAM) affiliate to endorse James Mwenda for the local soccer governing body’s presidency ahead of elections in December.

CRFA general secretary Bernard Chiwiruwiru confirmed the development yesterday, but insisted the door is still open for other potential candidates to be considered.

“So far, Mwenda is the only presidential candidate that approached and told us his plans. He is somebody who has grown through the ranks in our fold and we will support him,” he said.

“However, we expect the other potential presidential candidates to come and convince us that their football development plans are much better.

“If they do not come to us before September.”

On his part, Mwenda said he is humbled by the CRFA’s gesture.

“This shows the confidence that the CRFA has in me and I do not take it for granted,” he said.

Incumbent FAM president Walter Nyamilandu, who is yet to decide on whether he will seek a fifth term, did not comment on the matter but he is on record as  having said Mwenda’s endorsement “is a mere propaganda”. Their Northern Region counterparts, Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), were the first to opt for the incumbent FAM first vice-president last week
