Chakwera dares Malawians to develop country
President Lazarus Chakwera has dared Malawians to take interest in the development of the country for Malawi to make meaningful progress.
Speaking yesterday during Kamuzu Day celebrations at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, the President saluted founding president Hastings Kamuzu Banda for inspiring the fight for the country’s independence and development.
He called on Malawians to emulate Kamuzu’s life who initiated several development projects, but also made sure that Malawians are not oppressed by foreigners.
Said Chakwera: “As a nation, we need to decide our destiny. Do not expect foreigners to come and develop the country. We need to do it ourselves. No one will come to give us forex, no one will come to develop factories, no one will come to construct our roads and buildings that have been destroyed by Cyclone Freddy.”
The President said Malawi needs to reclaim its lost glory and stand out in Africa, adding it will take Malawians to create industries, boost the economy, construct good roads and other developments.
In his remarks, a representative of the Kamuzu Banda family, Ken Kandodo lamented that Malawi has lost track when it comes to development.
He said Kamuzu left a good foundation which should have helped the country attain meaningful development if leaders had continued from where he left.
Said Kandodo: “The challenge is that leaders do not continue projects that others left, as such’ there is no clear direction in the development of the country.”
However, he commended Chakwera for initiating various developments in line with the the foundation laid by Kamuzu Banda.
On his part, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda said the Chakwera administration is committed to promoting the history of the country and honouring those that contributed to the development of the country.
He added that government is committed to take over management of late Bingu wa Mutharika’s mausoleum in Thyolo and is only waiting for a response from the family.
The elebrations were marked by prayers, traditional dances, music performances by Skeffa Chimoto, Lucius Banda and Black Missionaries as well as a friendly football match between FCB Nyasa Bullets and Silver Strikers.
