Chakwera in voter mobilisation drive
President Lazarus Chakwera has appealed to people in Ntchisi District to register in the ongoing voter registration exercise ahead of the September 16 2025 General Election.
Speaking on Wednesday at Khuwi Trading Centre during the inspection of development projects in the district, the President said it is only through voting that his administration could continue with development projects.
“Let us unite and go for registration and make sure that everyone should register. Registering is the only way that is mandated for one to vote. If you still want better tobacco prices and development projects to continue, make sure you register and cast a vote next year,” said Chakwera.
He also said the hunger that has hit the nation is a result of El Niño weather conditions the country experienced in the previous growing season.
Chakwera said his government is engaging the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) to distribute maize to food-insecure people.
Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda told people in the district that the voter registration exercise will be closed on Sunday; hence, they should registered before then.
Ntchisi South legislator Ulemu Chilapondwa (Malawi Congress Party) commended government’s efforts in developing the country through various interventions, saying people in the district have witnessed good tobacco prices at the market.
However, he urged government to assist people in the district to access loans from National Economic Empowerment Fund.
Chilapondwa also asked government to increase the number of Affordable Inputs Programme beneficiaries in the district.
Traditional Authority Kalumo said traditional leaders in the district will ensure eligible voters register by Sunday before the first phase closes
