Chakwera seeks help on SDGs

President Lazarus Chakwera has said Malawi is making progress in the reconstruction and resilience building efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, but has appealed for support to boost capacity.

The President said this during a meeting with global partners and investors during the Malawi Partners Conference on the sidelines of 78th United Nations General Assembly Conference in New York on Tuesday.

He said Malawi is making progress despite the setbacks of global pandemics and some external shocks that have slowed down the economic growth.

Chakwera said the to find finding practical solutions to achieve SDGs which seek to improve people’s welfare by ensuring that countries meet set benchmarks on the variables.

“It is not about Chakwera to do it alone to achieve this, we need  collaboration and collective efforts to develop our country Malawi,” he said.

The President expressed concern that some African countries, including Malawi may not meet the 17 SDGs by 2030 due to climate change, natural disasters and Covid-19 pandemic.

He appealed for more support from development partners, financial institutions and other advanced countries to assist Malawi to achieve the SDGs by 2030.

Speaking earlier, African Development Bank president Dr Akinwumi Adesina, Scottish First Minister Humza Yoasaf and some notable global partners pledged their financial support to assist Malawi to regain economic growth.

In his keynote address, renowned American economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs noted that education is a key to development; hence, the need to invest more in the education sector.

The event, held under the theme ‘Building resilience and sustainable development in the face of shocks’, is expected to mobilise funds for Malawi’s SDG drive.

The Malawi Partners 2023 brought together stakeholders to appreciate efforts the country is making towards building economic and climate resilience and making financial and technical investment commitments for a better Malawi.
