Chatama says no time for recycled players

Ekhaya FC new head coach Enos Chatama says he won’t go for recycled players as he embarks on his journey as mentor of the newly-promoted  TNM Super League side.

The former FCB Nyasa Bullets Reserves’ coach said this yesterday after signing a two-year contract that will keep him at the CowBoys’ base until January 2027.

Said Chatama: “I know a lot of teams will scramble for recycled players to bolster their Super League squads but we will not go for more of such players. We will go for youngsters that will be developed into future stars.

“I am a team builder. I want to build a good team for Ekhaya FC. I will bring in players that have a bright future for Malawi football.”

So far, Ekhaya has beefed up its squad by roping in three players that went through Chatama’s hands, namely Bullets main team’s former defender Kesten Simbi, Bullets Reserves former defender Happy Mphepo and Bangwe All Stars former goalkeeper Elias Missi.

Chatama will be assisted by Moses Chavula, who guided Ekhaya FC to Super League promotion.

Former Bullets Reserves’ goalkeepers trainer Vincent Gona has also joined Ekhaya FC in the same role.

Ekhaya FC chief executive officer Thando Mhango said they have given the Chatama-led technical panel a target of surviving relegation at the the end of the 2025 season.

“However, we will not give the coach and fellow technical staff too much pressure on meeting the target because we know achieving success is a gradual process,” said Mhango, who was accompanied by club chairperson Mphatso Mpinganjira and team manager Francis Khan.

Prior to his new job, Chatama coached Bullets Reserves for the past eight years in the ThumbsUp Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) League Premier Division. At one point, he steered Bullets Reserves to ThumbsUp glory but the team could not earn Super League promotion because football rules do not allow a club to have two teams in the same league. Bullets’ main team already competes in the top-flight league.

Ekhaya earned Super League promotion on their first attempt after winning the 2024 ThumbsUp league.
