Artists done with rest, set out 2025 plans

The entertainment industry is slowly but surely waking up from the January slumber when artists slow down after a hectic Christmas and New Year season.

During the month of January, artists tend to recharge, work on new strategies for the year and implement some projects away from the stage such as recording new songs and producing music videos.

If you factor in the free spending festive season, the purchasing power of most people is squeezed as they try to manoeuvre to pay pertinent bills, including school fees.

There is hardly room for many to spend on entertainment. It is little surprise that the entertainment space hibernates naturally.

After a slow start to the year, the pending start of the new month has signalled the kick-starting of another run of entertainment events in the year 2025. Having refreshed, a number of artists are ready to hit the road once again.

One of the artists embarking on their 2025 journeys is amapiano musician Temwah who will be performing at Mzuzu University on Saturday.

Speaking in an interview with Chill during the week, she said having experienced a busy 2024, she dedicated most of her resting time to attend to family and recording new songs. She said the resting time is now over and she is ready to hit the road.

Said Temwah: “The time off not only allows one to rest, but also re-focus. I feel it is now time to claim my space on the global scene. It is now time to share my music with the whole world. Malawians have listened to Temwah, now is the time for the world to sample my work.”

The Ndili Kuti creator has also indicated that she will host a big solo concert soon.

Zembani Band’s Jonny Zembani Banda has also painted a busy 2025 outlook for the outfit, including solo projects from some of the group’s members. Banda said after an intense December, the group has benefitted from the January rest.

“We are currently in the studio trying to finalise one or two projects. We were supposed to release our first single by January 6, but we encountered some technical hitches during production,” he said.

Banda said among the standout projects are releases from band leader Sam Smack and his tribute to his late father ‘Soldier’ Lucius Banda. He also said they will unveil new members, who are also poised to release their solo projects.

Another group set to make a comeback this weekend, is the reggae outfit Black Missionaries Band.

The Chileka-based group is scheduled to headline the birthday celebrations of retired music promoter Jai Banda at Scallas’ Café in Blantyre on Sunday.

In an interview, front man Anjiru Fumulani said they have benefitted from the rest although it was intermittent.

Fumulani said: “With all the long distance travelling it is always difficult to focus on other personal things. When you have some time to rest it is always good as it gives you space to relax, focus on family and other engagements such as farming.”

He said although they have made a comeback, their usual schedule will roll out by the end of February.

Urban music heartthrob Piksy said the time off is always crucial as it allows one to take stock of what they have done in the previous year and set benchmarks for the coming year.

“There is a lot that our fans will enjoy starting with a first show on Valentine’s Day at Kitchen Hub in Lilongwe. We are also introducing online sessions together with the Langwani Movement Band which will be interactive. The year 2025 will be another exciting journey,” he said.

Lilongwe-based music maestro Lulu and Mathumera Band will also make a bow this wekend with a performance at Mibawa Multipurpose Hall in Blantyre on Saturday.
