China has called on countries to abide by the United Nations (UN) Charter to make the world a safer place.

The People’s Republic of China Ambassador Long Zhou said this in Lilongwe Friday evening during a gala to commemorate the 96th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Tembo: Malawi can learn a lot from China

Said Long: “The world today is not a tranquil place: transformations of the world unseen in a century are unfolding at a faster pace, major-country competition is intensifying, geopolitical conflicts are escalating, the global security governance system is lagging behind, and traditional and non-traditional security threats keep flaring up.

“All countries are confronted by multiple risks and challenges rarely seen in history, and human society faces multiple security dilemmas like never before.”

He said Chinese President Xi Jinping has put forward the Global Security Initiative to make the world a safer place.

“This will help address the complex and intertwined security challenges with the win-win mindset, adapt to the changing international landscape in the spirit of cooperation, and create a new path to security that features dialogue over confrontation, partnership over alliance and win-win over zero-sum,” said the envoy.

Several government officials led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo and senior Malawi Defence Force officers led by chief of staff Major General George Jaffu, among others, attended the event.

On her part, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo said the Chinese Army should act as a model to MDF and Malawi as a nation.

“The Chinese Army has been key in carrying out infrastructure development work in China through construction of roads, buildings and other civil engineering works that have transformed China.

“Our MDF has learned from them and can still learn more. We have an Engineering Battalion. The PLA is also into peacekeeping operations like MDF. There is a lot we can learn from each other,” she said.

In his speech, Jaffu commended the PLA for being a key player in ensuring global peace.

He said the PLA has played a crucial role not only in the protection of China sovereignty and development but also global peace.

“China has also been instrumental in contributing to global peace and security through various support it provides to nations and defence forces besides its role to committing to peaceful development,” said Jaffu.
