Temwa dedicates golden boot feat to teammates

US-based Scorchers forward Temwa Chawinga says her teammates played a big role in her 2026 TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) golden boot feat.

The Kansas City Current striker won the award with five goals and two assists as the Malawi National Women’s Football Team finished as runners-up at the continental showpiece in their maiden appearance.

“I owe it to my teammates. They helped me to win the golden boot and I am very excited. I also thank God,” he was quoted as having said by Spm Sports.

On the 3-0 loss to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses, the reigning National Women’s Soccer League golden boot winner and Most Valuable Player, said: “Nothing went wrong really. Cameroon is a big team that has been at Wafcon on several occasions.

“I think it wasn’t just our day. It was the first time for us to be here. So, we are proud of what we have achieved. The girls worked really hard.”

The Scorchers vice-captain said their focus will now shift to the 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Her France-based sister, Tabitha, who is the Scorchers’ captain, said she is proud of her sister’s achievement.

“As I said that I would be happy if she won it. So, yes, I am extremely proud of her,” said Tabitha, who scored four goals, one shy of Temwa.
