Chitipa frustrate Wanderers

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers coach Mark Harrison has described yesterday 1-0’s home loss to  Chitipa United at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre as a costly mistake in their campaign.

He said the first TNM Super League defeat, which followed substitute Chiukepo Msowoya’s own goal eight minutes to time, has come at an awkward time when their next outing is against another Northern Region side Karonga United.

Wanderers head coach Mark Harrison reacts after Chitipa had scored a goal

“I am very disappointed that we could not draw any positives from this game. It was like we had no clue on our expectations. All the same, it is a must that we register a win in our next outing. Otherwise, today’s result is very frustrating,” Harrison said.

With the shock defeat, the Lali Lubani Road outfit failed to dislodge defending champions FCB Nyasa Bullets from the summit of the log-table.

Prior to the clash, the Nomads and Bullets were tied at 14 points from six matches, but the latter had a superior goal difference.

The latest result leaves Wanderers stuck on second place as Bullets seek to widen the gap this afternoon as they face Red Lions at the soccer mecca.

At present, Bullets and third-placed Silver Strikers are the only unbeaten sides in the 16-team league.

Meanwhile, Chitipa have moved six places up to the fourth position on the table with 10 points from seven games. This is so far their third win in the league where they also have a draw and three losses.

On his part, Chitipa coach McDonald Mtetemera said they were happy to have registered a win against one of the giant clubs in the country.

“This win has come through hard work and determination. I am proud of my boys for giving their all as this win is a big morale booster,” he said.

In the first half, Wanderers and Chitipa created a few half chances, but Chitipa upped their game in the last 20 minutes and it was no surprise that they got the precious goal.

The goal came in the 82nd minute. Rajab Nyirenda took a corner-kick and Gedo Lorenzo headed the ball towards the goal’s far corner before Msowoya finished it off as he tried to clear it.

In another interesting affair yesterday, rookies Extreme FC lost 2-1 to hosts Mafco at Chitowe Stadium to remain at the bottom of the table while Ekwendeni Hammers and Karonga United settled for a one-all draw at Mzuzu Stadium.
