Traditional leaders in Thyolo have applauded a Christian organisation—Thyolo Active Youth Organisation (Tayo)—for its efforts in improving hygiene through rehabilitation of broken down boreholes.

Tayo was established in 2000 by a group of young Christians as a non-profit organisation aimed at promoting social and spiritual well-being of the youth.

With funding from US-based charity Watering Malawi, Tayo is implementing a year-long water sanitation and hygiene (Wash) project in Traditional Authority (T/As) Nchilamwela and Kapichi.

Kapichi said in interview on Thursday that the project has increased access to safe water and sanitation in her area to reduce waterborne diseases.

Tayo executive director Willard Mwambo said the main focus of the project is to rehabilitate non-functional boreholes.

He said a recent research his organisation conducted in public schools revealed deteriorated hygiene from broken down play pumps, which were donated by the Rotary and Interact Club of Bishop’s Stortford of England.

“Communities have reverted to unprotected wells to draw water for domestic use,” said Mwambo.
