Churches council cautions clergy against political interference

Malawi Council of Churches (MCC) board chairperson the Reverend Billy Gama has urged religious leaders to avoid imposing political parties or candidates on their congregants as the country prepares for the September 16  General Election.

He was speaking in Lilongwe yesterday  when MCC hosted a prayer meeting breakfast with the Logos University of the United States of America.

“The point is that the church comprises people of different political affiliations, so the moment a religious leader begins showing political favouritism, the church is in danger of being torn apart,” said Gama.

While acknowledging that the clergy has a role to guide people on how to choose responsible leaders, Gama said people’s right to choose a leader should be respected at all times.

During the meeting, MCC and the Logos University sealed a partnership which will see them work together to promote entrepreneurial skills for religious leaders and the general public.

Logos University Chancellor Ron Johnson said the institution offers high quality trainings and has programmes tailored to drive successful enterprises.

“Religious leaders should have business ventures to support themselves and in so doing, it also makes their responsibility easy and they set an example for their congregants,” he said.

I Can Leadership Institute Africa was also present at the meeting and its president David Molapo shared insights on balancing religious leadership and entrepreneurship.
