College of Medicine in Blantyre has become Africa’s ninth High Performance Centre (HPC) after being officially accredited by the Association for Sports Performance Centres (ASPC) in Spain few weeks ago.

The other HPCs, which nurture young talents into professional athletes and tune up elite athletes ahead of crucial international competitions, are found in South Africa and Kenya. South Africa has seven whereas Kenya has one.

College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex manager Gus Banda on Wednesday said following the accreditation, the HPC will start its operations at the start of next academic year in September.

“We are proud to be one of the few countries on the continent to have such an essential facility,” said Banda.
