Commissioner blasts corrupt traffic cops
Central Region Police commissioner George Kainja has said traffic police are denting the image of the Malawi Police Service because of their alleged corrupt tendencies on the roads.
Kainja was speaking during a meeting of the Regional Executive Committee (REC) on community policing at Central Region Police Headquarters where a new REC was elected.
“I am ashamed with corrupt practices happening in the traffic police system. It is true, it is happening and we all know it and this is what is damaging our image as police service,” said Kainja.
He said due to corruption, road accidents in the country have increased by 18 percent this year resulting in loss of lives.
Kainja said road users also fuel corrupt practices by accepting to bribe officers to be allowed to use the roads when found guilty.
He said: “We know that the officers ask for something to release a road user who has committed an offence but if you no to that, corruption would not be happening and only roadworthy vehicles would be moving on the roads.”
