Mangochi district agriculture extension coordinating committee has expressed satisfaction with climate change interventions implemented in Senior Chief Jalasi in Mangochi District.

The communities, with support from non-governmental organisations and government, are engaged in irrigation farming, rainwater harvesting, soil and water conservation and conservation agriculture, known as integrated catchment conservation management.

Speaking on Friday in the area before the committee launched the 2022 integrated catchment conservation and management campaign, the district’s director of agriculture, environment and natural resources Enford Kanyimbo commended the communities for their hard work in implementing the interventions.

He said: “I am impressed with the communities’ hardworking spirit. We have seen that the interventions are solving flood problems. This is wonderful. We want to encourage the communities to ensure that there is proper management of catchment areas to mitigate the impact of climate change.”

Mangochi district agriculture extension coordinating committee chairperson Aggrey Mfune encouraged men to participate in the initiative, saying their involvement will help the initiative to succeed.

Senior Chief Jalasi asked his subjects to take the initiative seriously to make their families food-secure.

One of the farmers, James Missi, who is also chairperson of Ninje Watershed Committee, said the interventions have transformed their families.
