Communities in Karonga team up to finalise clinic
Kilupula Area Development Committee (ADC) has mobilised resources from the community for buying lime and cement to complete the construction of Mwangomba Clinic in Traditional Authority Kilupula in Karonga District.
In his remarks after the handover yesterday, Kilupula ADC chairperson Kingdom Malanda said the donation was part of his committee’s self-led community initiative to complement government’s efforts in improving social services.
He said small-scale businesspeople, community members and Karonga Lufilya legislator Abraham Mwakhwawa (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) alongside Karonga Nyungwe parliamentarian Mungasulwa Mwambande (MCP) contributed their resources towards the course.

Said Malanda: “This demonstrates the importance of communities taking responsibility for development in their area.
“Self-initiative is important because government alone cannot meet all the development needs of our communities. This is why, as an ADC, we established a fund where people contribute towards development projects.”
He further said they are implementing other development initiatives, including maintenance of community roads, construction of community-based childcare centres and construction of bathrooms at Kaporo Rural Hospital.
Karonga district director of economic planning Gildrate Kavalo commended the ADC for taking an active role in supporting development initiatives.
“Community participation is key to ensuring that projects respond to local needs,” he said.
