At least 1 450 school teams have registered for this year’s Copa Coca-Cola Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) games that will start at zonal level on Saturday.

The number of schools taking part in the annual contest has increased by 365 from last year’s 1 085. It is almost double from 816 that registered in 2013.

Speaking yesterday during a press briefing in Blantyre, Carlsberg Malawi senior brands manager (non-alcoholics) Titha Mbilizi said they are impressed with the turn-out and this shows that the 48-year-old competition is making a great impact on the lives of pupils and communities.

“We are happy to note that every year the number of participating teams is tremendously growing.  This shows we are making progress on our mission to enlighten and excite the communities while giving them opportunities to excel through football,” said Mbilizi.

Registration of teams for the 2015 event, whose sponsorship has been increased from last year’s K36 million to K46 million, started on January 31 and closed on Monday.

This year, Massa went to schools to register the teams unlike previously when the schools had to approach local schools competition organisers whenever they wanted to participate.

According to Carlsberg Malawi corporate communications officer Towera Munthali, the contest will have district finals on March 14 and 15 while the divisional finals will be conducted between March 28 and 29.

“Then, we will have a break between April and July to give room for examinations in schools before having the national finals from July 31 to August 2 at Balaka Stadium,” said Munthali.
