Cricket team in Ghana for World Cup qualifier

The Malawi Men’s National Cricket Team is in Ghana for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier B which starts today.

The team’s new captain Gift Kansonkho yesterday said they are set for a good start as they face Tanzania in their opener this morning.

He said, overall, they are determined to take a step further by progressing to the next round as champions after finishing as runners-up during the 2024 qualifiers.

“We had good preparations ahead of these qualifiers and I do not see the reason why we should not win and progress to the next stage,” said Kansonkho.

“We are ready to represent the nation with focus on a strong opening performance.”

In the latest campaign, Malawi will also take on hosts Ghana tomorrow, Eswatini on Friday, Seychelles on Saturday and St Helena on Sunday.

Cricket Malawi president Vivek Ganesan said he is confident that the team will do well due to a series of structured preparations.

He said the tournament provides an opportunity for Malawi to compete at a higher level and advance their ambitions within of becoming a formidable force in international cricket.
